Pets are family — and yet millions are left behind.
According to PetSmart Charities, more than 50 million pets go without essential medical and preventive care simply because their families can’t afford it or don’t have access to nearby veterinary services.
This isn’t a small gap — it’s a crisis.
Too many pets fall into what’s known as the veterinary care “gap,” where rising costs put care out of reach and entire communities — especially rural and underserved areas — face a serious shortage of providers. Veterinary medicine is highly specialized and increasingly expensive. As prices continue to climb faster than inflation, the divide between those who can access care and those who can’t grows wider.
In low-density regions, the challenge is even greater. Veterinary practices struggle to survive, leaving entire communities with little to no access to care.
Compare this to human healthcare, where is a safety net of government programs, nonprofits, and community-based services step in when people can’t afford care.
